The reason why banquets are still popular today is not hard to fathom. They are the very icon of indulgence and splendour. Colourful surroundings, exotic and plentiful food and drink and an atmosphere of conviviality and celebration draw people into the idea of wanting to go to a banquet at some point in their lives.

Today banquets are hosted for many different reasons – sometimes public and sometimes in private though generally always for a large gathering. It might be a special celebration, a charitable gathering, a special ceremony or presentation. Speeches are usually given at some point. Indeed, in some countries today banquets are hosted at the end of an academic conference.

Some medieval castles that are still open to the public stage banquets every year as a means of raising money for their upkeep. There are also venues who style themselves totally in the vein of a medieval banqueting hall that you can hire for your own private function. There are even companies who will bring a medieval banquet to you – at your chosen venue!
